Is CBD Dangerous?

What You Need to Know About E-Cigs, CBD, and THC

The long-term effects on safety and health of using e-cigarette liquids are not yet well understood and are often a source of conflicting opinions.

This is especially true when we talk about CBD e-cigarettes or vaping hemp flowers through electronic devices.

Nicotine and THC

In September 2019, U.S. health authorities launched an investigation into a serious lung disease associated with the use of e-cigarette liquids, whether they are nicotine or THC-based, which has greatly unsettled “vapers.”

The molecule responsible for these dangerous health effects seems to be vitamin E acetate, a natural substance found in vegetable oils and often used in the industry as an additive. Along with nicotine e-liquids, THC e-cigarette liquids have also come under the scrutiny of scientists, although, according to the Veronesi Foundation, “the causal link between vitamin E acetate and diseases remains to be demonstrated and there may be other substances responsible” (cit).

The CBD

The question of CBD is slightly different, on which scientific research interest is more focused.

In recent years, legal and illegal marijuana laws have continued to change both in Italy and in other countries around the world: what was once disparaged as a potentially dangerous “passing” drug (CBD or cannabidiol) is now recognized by many states as a natural compound with medicinal properties. A good alternative that can help you manage a range of health issues, including stress, anxiety, muscle pain, or much more serious illnesses.

Difference Between Smoking and Vaping Light Cannabis

From legal marijuana, referred to as Light Hemp in jargon, various end products can be obtained: hashish, flowers, extracts, and oils e-cig CBD liquids. For this reason, there are also several ways to consume it, among the most common being inhalation.

  • To inhale a liquid, you need an e-cigarette equipped with an atomizer.
  • To inhale a flower, you need a vaporizer or a traditional cigarette.

CBD Vaping Liquids

To inhale CBD from a liquid substance, you need a liquid vaporizer or an e-cigarette, just like with nicotine (or THC, in countries where this substance is not illegal).

Simply insert the CBD liquid into the e-cigarette tank and proceed to inhale the produced vapor.

When we talk about e-cigarette liquids, it’s good to remember that they are substances composed mainly of 2 ingredients:

  • Vegetable glycerin: its main function is to produce vapor. It is present in the liquid in a percentage ranging from a minimum of 50% to a maximum of 80%.
  • Propylene glycol: its task is to enhance the aroma present in the vaping liquid.

When choosing the most appropriate CBD liquid for your e-cig, it is important to consider the type of atomizer mounted: there are e-cigarettes for mouth-to-lung hits (they produce less vapor and should therefore be used with liquids with low glycerin concentration) and those for direct lung hits (they produce a lot of vapor and should be used with liquids with high glycerin concentration).

If you are used to making your own e-cigarette base, you just need to add a few drops of CBD oil to get your liquid at the desired concentration (although we always advise against DIY when it comes to cannabinoids). Conversely, it is better to buy ready-to-use liquids for vaping.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Vaping

Most people are led to believe that consuming CBD through vaping is safer than smoking because it does not involve inhaling all the substances generated by the combustion of a cigarette. In fact, when it comes to vaping oils and e-cigarette liquids (whether from marijuana or not), much less is known about the negative health effects, as demonstrated by the study on the effects of inhaling vitamin E acetate, the chemical additive present in many vaping products (mainly THC and nicotine).

This is why smoking is still the most widespread.

Light Cannabis

The use of Light Hemp by smoking method (the traditional cigarette) is simply done by “rolling” the hemp flower, as if it were a real “tobacco drum.”

For decades, health experts have warned the public about the dangers of inhaling tobacco smoke from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. For Light Marijuana, the presence of CBD (Cannabidiol) with its beneficial effects eclipses the risk of inhalation through combustion.

Some beneficial effects of taking CBD have been demonstrated and supported by extensive scientific literature, while others are still under study. The fact is that the beneficial effects of CBD on the human body are some of the reasons why many people believe that smoking light hemp is less dangerous than smoking tobacco.

It should be noted that not all cannabinoids are the same; in fact, the discussion about tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive substance in marijuana responsible for the “high.” This is why Light Cannabis (also called legal hemp) must contain very low concentrations, adhering to the parameters set by our legislation: in particular, the THC present in hemp must not exceed 0.5% (0.6% during field flowering).

Effects of CBD E-Cigarette Liquids

In Italy, the only “marijuana liquids” allowed are those containing CBD, with a high concentration of cannabidiol and low concentration of THC. In this way, taking Light Cannabis can produce a strong sense of peace of mind and calm without the paranoia, discomfort, and other side effects that some people experience when consuming marijuana.

The most commonly reported effects of inhaling CBD e-cigarette liquids are a feeling of calm or relaxation, relief from pain or anxiety, and an overall improvement in mood. At high doses, CBD can induce drowsiness, but in small amounts, it can have the opposite effect, promoting alertness.

It is important to know that the choice of CBD concentration in the liquid does not depend much on the type of device you use for ingestion, but on the desired effect.

We remind you that smoking is very harmful to health. CBD e-cigarette liquids do not replace medication, so we do not recommend using CBD without the advice and supervision of a physician.

We urge you not to consume cannabis products that are not legal: they can be very dangerous to health, lead to unpredictable side effects, and cause serious problems with the law.

Regarding legal hemp, to be defined as such, it must be cultivated in accordance with strict regulatory parameters regarding seeds and THC content.

Finally, we remind you that smoking seriously harms your health.
